Eskom power stations among several new Bitcon fire door contracts

Two of Eskom’s new multi-billion rand power stations are being fitted with fire doors produced by Bitcon Industries of Jet Park, part of the Vitrex Group of companies.

Bitcon director, Bob Vollmer, says Bitcon the company is supplying its reliable Rubidor fire doors and frames for both Medupi and Kusile power stations. “Some of the fire doors are being manufactured according to special specifications. The contracts for the two new power stations are the latest of many placed with Bitcon over the years by Eskom for its power stations throughout South Africa,” Vollmer stated.

Medupi, now under construction in Lephalale in Limpopo province, will on completion be the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world. The main contractor is the Medupi Power Station Joint Venture consisting of Murray & Roberts, Concor, and Grinaker LTA.

Kusile, being constructed near Delmas by the Kusile Civil Works Joint Venture consisting of Stefanutti Stocks Civils, Group Five Civil Engineering, Basil Read and WBHO Construction, will be one of the largest coal-fired power stations globally when finished.

Bitcon’s Rubidor fire doors were also specified by Paragon Architects for the new Alexander Forbes head office in Sandton. The R840m project for the financial services giant, now being constructed by a WBHO-Tiber Bonvec Construction Joint Venture, is a 4-star ‘Green’- rated building which will provide 38 000square metres of office space.

Bitcon also supplied the fire doors for Menlyn Corner, another ‘green’-rated office block on the corner of Lois Avenue and Atterbury Road in Pretoria. Recently acquired by listed property company, Growthpoint Properties, the architects for this impressive office block were Boogertman + Partners; and the main contractor is Stefanutti Stocks Building Gauteng. The 10 000sq m new office block is opposite Menlyn Park Shopping Centre.

Emalahleni architects, Michael Payne Associates, specified Bitcon fire doors for the new Highveld Eye Hospital now being built in Emalahleni (formerly Witbank) by JC van der Linde & Venter Projects.

Finally, Bitcon is also supplying the fire doors for a new Telkom Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering (ETE) development on the Cape Town Foreshore for which Group Five is the main contractor.
