Saint-Gobain Gyproc has announced the introduction of a high impact resistance plaster board walling system to their product portfolio in South Africa, available in July 2012.
GypWall DuraLine has a higher density core and consists of an aerated gypsum core with glass fibre and other proprietary additives. It is suitable for drylining internal surfaces offering a high impact resistant walling system for use where more durable structures are needed. It provides a lightweight, cost effective, non-load bearing walling suitable for high circulation areas, including corridors and stairwells in healthcare, educational and commercial buildings.
Saint-Gobain Gyproc has confirmed that they will be introducing two systems namely; GypWall DuraLine 63/F60S45 and Gypwall DuraLine 63/F60S41. See www.gyproc.co.za for detailed information on the systems.
Test Results
When put through a number of tests to prove overall durability and performance levels, GypWall DuraLine offered superior performance. When a duty rating for structural strength was tested to BS (British standard) 5234: part 2, the product earned a Severe duty rating. Both systems achieved a 60 minute integrity and insulation fire rating according to SANS 10177 part 2, and in the acoustic tests done in accordance to BS EN ISO 140-3:1995 the products achieved a 45 Decibel rating with insulation and 41 Decibel rating with no insulation.
In addition, GypWall DuraLine weighs just 14.75kg per square meter and can be installed at a speed of up to between 40 to 50 square meters per day. The product indicates a loading capacity of up to 120kgs of planned loadings and up to 30kgs of unplanned loadings, and a single layer walling system can go up to a height of 3.6 meters.
GypWall DuraLine specified in the building of a hospital in India – A case study
In a recent project completed in India, GypWall DuraLine was specified as the plasterboard wall for use given its ability to meet the design requirements specified for the building of the 20 000 square meter Wockhardt Hospital.
The entire project had to be completed in an eight to twelve month period and two floors housing the ICU and twin-bed patient rooms had to be finished within two months.
The design requirements of the project included the following specifications:
- Acoustics – 37dB
- Fire rating – 60 minutes of Integrity and Insulation
- Impact Resistance – Severe Duty Rating
- Loadings (planned and unplanned)
- Space Constraint – Thickness of internal walls
- Height – 3.6m
GypWall DuraLine was selected for its ability to meet the challenges of the specifications including the time constraints of the project, the strength of board partition compared to a conventional brick wall, loadings required on the walling system, the pricing of the product and its longevity in terms of performance. In addition, GypWall DuraLine met every specification indicated for the project as per the results achieved in international tests the product underwent.
DuraLine is the standard board that has, to date been used in five hospitals in India, and has been specified in additional hospital projects due to be completed in 2012 and 2013.

The company recently commissioned a video shoot, where video footage was recorded of school desks and chairs being physically thrown at a GypWall DuraLine walling system. The wall remained completely intact, incurring no damage at all, which is visual evidence showcasing the high impact durability of the product. This footage is available to view at www.gyproc.co.za
