AECOM, a global leader in infrastructure consulting, has been recognised for its outstanding contributions to engineering excellence in Africa. The company received two commendations at the 2026 CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards, held on 21 August 2026. The awards celebrated AECOM’s innovative work on the R573 Moloto Road Section 2 Upgrade in South Africa, and the Polihali Western Access Road in Lesotho.

Moloto Road Section 2: Improving safety and mobility

The R573 Moloto Road Section 2 Upgrade spans 48km and is a critical infrastructure project aimed at improving road safety and mobility. The project transformed a single carriageway into a divided road, incorporating 24 roundabouts, 18 access-management intersections and five widened bridges. Safety features include a median barrier, three pedestrian bridges and chicanes to reduce vehicle speeds.

AECOM utilised advanced digital tools such as drone surveys and data dashboards to monitor construction progress. The project also prioritised local economic participation, exceeding targets with approximately R277m spent on local enterprises and R65m on local labour. Additionally, 968 participants received training and 128 local labour opportunities were created.

Polihali Western Access Road: Enabling the Polihali Dam project

The Polihali Western Access Road is a 55km greenfield route through the challenging terrain of the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho. The project also included resurfacing 98km of existing roads, constructing bridges, culverts and retaining walls, and protecting sensitive wetlands. The road, situated at altitudes between 2,100 and 2,850m, plays a vital role in supporting the Polihali Dam, part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

AECOM employed innovative techniques such as drone surveys, 3D terrain modelling, and polymer-modified bitumen for pavement durability. The project also supported local skills development through a Young Professional-In-Training programme, addressing logistical and permitting challenges to deliver a resilient infrastructure solution.

Drone surveys and 3D modelling enhanced precision and efficiency, while tailored pavement and slope-stabilisation solutions ensured long-term durability. Data dashboards provided real-time insights, enabling effective project management and decision-making.
