To be exceptional, a new shopping centre needs more than excellent design. It must be economically successful.
These decisive factors will come under the spotlight at the SACSC annual Retail Design & Development Awards (RDDA) 2012, a South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) initiative.
The awards, sponsored by Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, are a celebration of shopping centre development excellence. Entries are open until Monday, 2 July 2012.
The adjudicators, a panel of recognised and respected retail and property specialists, face the challenge of identifying the entries showing the highest calibre in the SA retail property industry.
Amanda Stops, General Manager of the SACSC, explains that the judges will take a holistic approach to assessing the retail development entries.
“Qualities which feature strongly on the evaluation scorecard include excellent design resolution, overall development objective, response to environment and market, innovative solutions and sustainability,” says Stops.
The awards cover four different categories of retail development, as well as an overall award selected from the top performers in each category.
Frank Berkeley, Managing Executive of Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, says that the bank is proud to play a role in supporting the retail sector beyond providing finance. “Nedbank’s sponsorship of the 2012 Retail Design and Development Awards demonstrates our commitment to the industry as it allows us to recognise all aspects of commercial property, including design and development’, he says.
New shopping centre developments will be judged in two groups according to size: greater than and less than 20,000sqm.
Extending the lifespan and relevance of SA’s retail property assets is essential for existing shopping centres and the renovation or expansion of malls of all sizes will be a unique class.
The design of any shop or restaurant in a shopping centre is the final category.
RDDA Winners will be announced at the SACSC’s Annual Congress which takes place from 19 to 21 September 2012.
Last year’s overall Design and Development Award went to Mall of the North in Polokwane, Limpopo, designed by MDS Architecture for co-developers and -owners Resilient Property Income Fund, Moolman Group and Flanagan & Gerard Property Development and Investment.
