On 27 January, Eskom, in collaboration with the Government of the Netherlands will officially launch the Grootvlei Climate Smart Horticulture Centre in Mpumalanga. This initiative is part of Eskom’s Just Energy Transition (JET) Programme. Furthermore, it represents a significant step in linking South Africa’s energy transition with agriculture, climate-smart food production and economic development.

A new vision for repurposed energy infrastructure

The new centre will demonstrate how repurposing energy-related infrastructure can support future-oriented economic activities beyond the energy sector. By integrating clean energy solutions with climate-smart horticulture, the project contributes to job creation, skills development, and the establishment of resilient local food system.

Climate-smart horticulture

Climate-smart horticulture focuses on producing food more efficiently and reliably while using fewer resources such as water and inputs. This approach is particularly relevant in Mpumalanga, where communities face challenges of climate change, water scarcity and economic transition. The centre will serve as a demonstration and training facility, equipping farmers, technicians and young professionals with practical, market-relevant skills.

A partnership for innovation

The partnership with the Netherlands highlights a shared commitment to practical, integrated solutions. Dutch expertise in high-tech horticulture, efficient water use, energy-smart production systems and agricultural value chain organisation is directly applicable to the challenges faced in Mpumalanga. A foundation for future development

What will begin as a demonstration and training site, is intended to evolve into a fully-fledged agrihub. The Grootvlei centre aims to integrate agriculture, energy, skills development and logistics, with increasing involvement from the private sector. This long-term vision aligns with the goals of the Just Energy Transition Programme, ensuring sustainable economic opportunities for local communities.
