Hubo Studio, a Johannesburg-based architectural firm, has achieved international acclaim by winning two prestigious Architizer A+Awards for its exceptional work on the Redhill Early Learning Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg. These accolades highlight the studio’s innovative approach to educational architecture. They also underscore the agency’s commitment to creating spaces that inspire curiosity, independence and collaboration among children.

The Redhill Early Learning Centre project earned Hubo Studio the Jury Winner award for Best Kindergarten and the Popular Choice Winner award in the Educational Interiors category. The latter was determined by a public vote, showcasing widespread appreciation for the studio’s design. These dual honours underscore the global recognition of South African architecture and its ability to resonate with both professional juries and the broader community.

A child-centred design philosophy

The Redhill Early Learning Centre spans 2,641m² and is designed around the Reggio Emilia educational model, which emphasises child-centred learning. Hubo Studio’s design concept reimagines the space as a ‘mini city’ for children, featuring interconnected areas that encourage exploration and interaction. At the heart of the centre is a central piazza, surrounded by vertical ateliers and fluid indoor-outdoor spaces. This layout fosters a sense of community and collaboration while promoting independence and curiosity among its young users.

The project was completed within 18 months at a construction value of R49.1 million. Its thoughtful design and execution have set a new benchmark for educational architecture in South Africa and beyond.
