Life Landscapes won the recent SALI Shield for Excellence in Landscaping for the progressive gardens at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, widely considered the industry’s highest accolade. Life Landscapes, a division of Life Green Group, also won an additional three gold South African Landscapers Institute (SALI) Awards for their garden installation at this forward thinking hospital.
Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital has six gardens, the arrival garden, visitor’s garden, sensory garden, occupations therapy garden, quiet garden and play garden. All the gardens are filled with mostly indigenous plants and are intended to promote healing. No two gardens are the same and each garden came with its own set of requirements to inspire children.
Ida-Marie Strydom attributes Life Landscapes success at SALI to the complexity of the landscape architects, GREENinc’s, design work. The design also left space for interpretation from the landscaping contractor, which further contributed to their accomplishments at SALI.
The intricate design allowed Life Landscapes to fully exercise their skill set, with scope of work extending beyond the garden to a variety of water features, pergola planters, seating walls, EPDM rubber flooring, multiple play areas, Artevia paving and intricate mosaic designs. Life Landscapes won a Gold SALI Award for Specialised Landscape Construction for the hardscaping at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.
Furthermore, the project was incredibly detailed and needed to be completed in a very short space of time. “Life Landscapes is extremely proud to have played a small part, in the legacy of a great icon and a life changing project,” said Life Green Group director Ida-Marie Strydom.
