A highlight for ART Solar at the end of May 2013, was a visit from the Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters, to the recently established plant in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal.
“We were proud to introduce the Minister to our team and to show the dignitaries around our new manufacturing facility. ART Solar has the latest equipment to manufacture 250 000 photovoltaic (PV) modules annually, according to stringent international quality specifications,” says Dr Ronald Lange ART Solar’s chief operating offer. “The company is committed to meeting South African PV challenges. These are to create sustainable local jobs in the private sector, to use manufacturing as a tool for a healthy and sustainable economy and to provide skills training for our team.”
Ms Peters expressed interest in the company’s experiences regarding the South African support schemes, which include the practices of REIPPP bidders in rounds 1 and 2, as well as a potential optimisation of the local content definition.
The Minister was given a tour of the factory by the operators – most of which are female. She was impressed by the high standard of skills training, evident from the confident and knowledgeable information presented by the operators about each process and their understanding of the automatic machines and robots.
ART Solar is truly South African. The company’s investment in the creation of meaningful jobs and the provision of ongoing skills training throughout the organisation, is seen as a solid education, giving career opportunities for a lifetime.
