This biennial design accelerator has been a launchpad for emerging talent since 2016, offering mentorship, market access and high-profile showcasing opportunities.

The challenge: Design a linear light for Nando’s restaurants

This year’s brief challenges participants to design a unique linear light fixture that can be installed in Nando’s restaurants worldwide. Linear lighting refers to fixtures aligned in a straight run, often used over long tables or counters. However, Nando’s is looking for innovative, sculptural and craft-driven designs that reflect their vibrant brand identity.

Key requirements:

• Maximum length: 1,4m
• Maximum weight: 28kg
• Focus on durability, transportability and ease of installation
• Incorporate handmade details and potential collaborations with local crafters
• Use materials and forms that complement Nando’s restaurant interiors

Programme structure

The HYD 2026 competition is divided into three phases:

1. Application phase: Submit your design concept online.
2. Shortlist phase: Selected finalists will develop prototypes of their designs.
3. Final phase: The winner will receive tailored support, including mentorship, market access, showcasing opportunities and engagement with South Africa’s top designer-makers.
