The vibrant Newtown precinct has become an increasingly popular cultural, shopping and entertainment hub in Johannesburg’s CBD for locals and tourists alike and now, for the first time ever, the area has its very own mall – Newtown Junction.
Equipped with 38 000 square metres of retail space and some 39 000 square metres of prime office space, this mixed-use project – developed by Atterbury Property Developments (APD) – has brought major outlets such as Pick ‘n Pay, Shoprite, Edgars, Truworths, the Foschini Group Stores, Mr Price, Clicks, Levingers, banks, as well as cellular and jewellery stores to the area. With 40 retail stores currently occupied, the development plans to have upwards of 70 outlets, including a Ster Kinekor cinema complex and a Planet Fitness gym, in operation by December, just in time for the festive season.
The soft launch, which took place at the end of September, was timed ahead of the Absa Joburg City Festival and the Vodacom In The City events, which were hosted in partnership with the Joburg city council and major sponsors, bringing throngs of visitors and shoppers to Newtown Junction in early October. The retail and leisure centre functioned as one of the anchor venues for the Absa Joburg City Festival, with a number of public performances taking place on its premises, hinting at the potential for the location to host similar events going forward.
Wiehan Strydom, Atterbury’s project manager on Newtown Junction says, ‘Newtown Junction’s location, next to the Market Theatre, makes it one of the most exciting and groundbreaking developments in the city. Six years in the making and at a cost of approximately R1.4 billion, Newtown Junction will serve a vital sector of our vibrant society in this cultural node within “old” Joburg.’
According to Atterbury’s Zahn Hulme, in support of the longevity of the centre and the surrounding area, Atterbury Property Developments also aims to establish a City Improvement District (CID) in the Newtown precinct, which will work to maintain Newtown Junction and its surrounds as a safe, clean and functional destination in the Johannesburg CBD well into the future.
