Southern Guild, Africa’s only design gallery representing collectable, limited-edition work from the continent, will open its new flagship venue at the V&A Waterfront Silo District in Cape Town this June, with its inaugural exhibition celebrating the most lauded local design heroes.

The group show, titled Stellar, will exhibit work by 23 South African heavyweights such as Andile Dyalvane, Dokter and Misses, Gregor Jenkin and Porky Hefer alongside work by Cheick Diallo from Mali and Hamed Ouattara from Burkina Faso.

Stellar represents the highest echelon of collectable design from this country – something we have been building since we founded Southern Guild,’ explains gallery co-founder Trevyn McGowan. ‘It’s a very important show for us and our designers – a culmination of the work we’ve been doing for nearly a decade with the leading design voices in the country.’

Since establishing Southern Guild in 2008, Trevyn and husband and business partner Julian McGowan have established a unique platform for collectable, limited edition African design. Taking the Southern Guild collection to international fairs such as Design Miami, Design Days Dubai and Collective in New York, Southern Guild has earned a dedicated global following, with notable design collectors seeking out its unique pieces.

The gallery last year represented South Africa with Porky Hefer at the inaugural London Design Biennale. It also celebrated the first museum acquisition of contemporary African design for the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia, and continues to facilitate design collaborations between significant New York galleries such as Friedman Benda and R & Company and Southern African design companies.

Stellar will showcase both globally recognised and never-before-seen work. The title, recognising excellence, relates to Southern Guild’s own identity, originally inspired by the Southern Cross constellation. ‘Stellar welcomes visitors into our universe of superstar designers,’ says Julian. ‘A universe where the country’s top designers are given an arena where they are promoted, nurtured and encouraged.’

Stellar will exhibit the work of:
