KMH Student Competition 2022
Sasha Czech, an honours architecture student studying at the University of Cape Town, was announced as the winner of the KMH Student Competition last month, while a “People’s Choice” award decided on public votes went to Luana Manhica, a master’s student at the at University of Cape Town
This year in celebration of youth month, KMH Architects launched a competition for students to celebrate their 110th year of continuous practice. They decided to focus the competition on the plethora of building completed by the practice in close proximity to their 116 Loop Street office. These buildings were mapped out and presented to students as blank canvases. They were to creatively represent the building in any media of their choice.
The entries were adjudicated by the 2021 Corobrik Student Architecture Award winner and former KMH intern, Mpho Sephelane. Entries were judged on the following categories: representation of the architecture, creativity and process, and individualism and personality.
Sasha Czech, an honours architecture student studying at University of Cape Town, was announced as the winner at and open studio event held at KMH’s officed last month. Mpho had the following to say about the winner: “[The] drawing is a very creative and imaginative representation of The Nico Malan Artscape Building. Not only does it portray the physical architecture, but it also illustrates a whimsical story of the space, how it feels, how it’s used and how it’s imagined by the author.”
KMH allocated another prize to a “People’s Choice” winner, decided purely on public votes. This award was won by Luana Manhica, who is studying her Masters at the at University of Cape Town.
Both winners captured the Artscape building formerly known as the Nico Malan completed by KMH in the 1970s. The success of the competition was a result of the dialogue between the footprint KMH has left in the city and the future designers who will one day leave their own footprint.
