Doors and windows symbolise openness and provide a way in for people, light and air. They also protect from external elements such as water damage, corrosion and rust.

The Pure Sea Boutique Lodge, designed by architect Denis Maas of MaC Architects, is situated on an exclusive estate nestled in a private valley directly facing the ocean over Walker Bay. It opened its doors in November 2022.

It is designed so that the upper entrance level contains the foyer, wellness spa and the owners’ living and bedroom spaces. The four ultra-luxurious guest suites (along with library/kitchen facility and pool) are located underneath, being slipped forward towards the sea.

Steel is robust and resistant to mechanical and weather damage. It also offers several possibilities in terms thermal insulation and structural dimensioning, characterised by oversized openings and slimline face widths.

Two large double doors have been designed to provide a dramatic sense of arrival. The entrance doors are timber, while the second, which opens to the ocean, is a magnificent 3.8 x 3m tall double-hinged steel door that invite guests directly onto the beach.

As this iconic steel double door would not have been possible in aluminium, the owner of the lodge used the Swiss steel system known as Jansen Eco 60 specially coated to match the rest of the European fenestration. The dry corrosion protection is designed to withstand the extreme coastal elements, with a specification that includes a thermal zinc spray, primer, and UV-resistant textured finishing coat.

These systems are designed for double and triple glazing, depending on the requirements of each project. In this case, double glazing was specified to reduce heating and cooling costs while maintaining occupant comfort, aided by deep timber overhangs facing the beach.

Indeed, what has proven its worth over many years in the automotive sector is now being used in the construction industry for the first time: galvannealed steel with a zinc-iron layer (ZF) for the basic corrosion protection of all steel profiles for window and door systems.

These profiles are also available in 316 stainless steel.

International Design Competition

The competition is open to recognised registered architects or studios. They can be from any country, but the project must be in South Africa. The building can belong to any property sector. Jansen product must be specified for a significant portion of the fenestration scope.

Each project will be evaluated on its own merits. Special considerations will be taken on how Jansen steel is incorporated into the envelope to bring improved spatial quality, unique character and energy performance.
