Construction on the highly anticipated Prince Buthelezi Mall in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, is officially underway. Designed by MDS Architecture, this innovative project is transforming a former sugar cane field into a modern and convenient retail destination for the local community.

A joint venture by Moolman Group, Twin City and Melta Capital, with Moolman Group leading the development, the shopping centre represents a significant investment in Empangeni’s economy. Scheduled to open its doors in April 2026, the mall will redefine the retail experience with its state-of-the-art facilities and well-curated offerings.

Addressing local retail needs

Empangeni has long faced a gap in retail infrastructure, with shoppers having to split their shopping between the CBD and surrounding suburbs – often travelling as far as Richards Bay for major purchases. In response to this pressing need, the Prince Buthelezi Mall is strategically located at Empangeni’s main crossroads. The development is set to provide a centralised and modern retail hub, catering to the diverse needs of the local consumer base.

With a gross leasable area of 35 000m², the Prince Buthelezi Mall will be a single-level, fully enclosed regional shopping centre. The design, as described by Pierre Lahaye, partner at MDS Architecture, is heavily influenced by the natural beauty of KwaZulu-Natal. The main entrance features striking curved shapes echoing the rolling local hills, while vertical green slats reference the region’s sugar cane fields. Both the interior and exterior design incorporate warm, earthy tones and textures inspired by the area’s trees, forging a deep connection to its environment.

Diverse offerings

Prince Buthelezi Mall has already secured major anchor tenants, including Checkers FreshX, Shoprite, Woolworths, Boxer, Dis-Chem, and Clicks. Additionally, the mall will introduce several retailers to Empangeni for the first time, such as Crazy Plastic, Crazy Pets, Converse, Dis-Chem, and Polo. Shoppers can also look forward to a wide variety of fashion, banking facilities and a food court that will elevate the shopping experience.

To complement the mall’s retail offering, the development includes a large new taxi rank and ample free parking, ensuring ease of access for visitors. The co-owners have also pledged to upgrade major roads around the mall, improving accessibility for the broader community. Beyond convenience and retail, the project is committed to using local contractors and boosting the local economy.
