New mall for Soshanguve

On 21 November 2025, Soshanguve Mall officially opened its doors

On 21 November 2025, Soshanguve Mall opened its doors and transformed the vibrant township of Soshanguve in Gauteng. The development introduces over 200 retailers, creates thousands of jobs and reflects a design that celebrates the area’s heritage. This retail hub aims to become the centre for culture, community and commerce in the region.

A mix of local and national retailers

Developers constructed the new mall on the site of the former Soshanguve Plaza. The mall showcases a vibrant mix of national retail brands and local businesses. It offers something for everyone – from fashion and beauty to groceries and financial services. Major tenants like Shoprite, Woolworths, Cashbuild, Mr Price, PEP and Capitec ensure accessibility and inspire aspirational shopping experiences. The mall serves the township’s 906 000 residents, known for their cultural richness and diversity.

A reflection of heritage

The mall does more than provide a platform for commerce. It reflects Soshanguve’s rich history and identity. Developers named it to honour the Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni and Venda people resettled here in 1974, celebrating this multicultural heritage and connecting its identity to the community.

Architectural accents draw inspiration from the Tswaing Meteorite Crater, a significant landmark in the region. Circular designs evoke this natural feature while paying homage to the township’s natural legacy. The design highlights local culture through interactive and educational spaces, helping visitors connect with their rich surroundings. Patrick Moraka, Stakeholder Engagement Specialist at Empowerploy, stated, ‘This mall embodies inclusion and empowerment. It’s a space for people to not only shop but to thrive, trade, and shape their futures.’

A grand opening celebration

The opening festivities on 21 November 2025 showcased live music, cultural performances and vibrant community participation. DJs and influencers energised the event, while TUT FM broadcasted live, heightening excitement across Gauteng. Thanks to collaborative efforts with the local taxi association, transport to and from the mall remained seamless, ensuring full participation.

Empowering the future

Soshanguve Mall stands as more than just a retail destination. It works as a catalyst for economic growth, community pride and cultural celebration. With more than 200 stores, a heritage-focused design and employment opportunities, the mall is changing the shopping experience in the township and contributing to sustainable livelihoods and significant regional economic development.
