Case Study: Yale Elanza Wireless Lockset at ReZident Student Accommodation

The Yale Elanza wireless solution by ASSA ABLOY was chosen for The ReZident, a new student accommodation located in Stellenbosch.

The ReZident is a new student accommodation located in Stellenbosch, South Africa. As a premium facility, it required an electronic security solution that would meet the requirements of managing 239 student rooms with some rooms being home to more than one student. The challenge was to find a solution that would be both cost-effective and compatible with the existing access control system used for perimeter access control. The Yale Elanza wireless solution by ASSA ABLOY was chosen due to the company’s excellent reputation within the door-locking industry for its high-quality products.

Solution

Yale Elanza electronic locks operate on an ‘update on card’ principle, which means that all RF-ID card permissions can be managed from a central point. The software allows records to be kept of which student is allocated to which room number, and the length of their access permissions can be linked to the length of their rental agreement. Since Elanza operates as an offline system, there are no costly hubs or nodes that need to be hard-wired back to a central controller, which kept costs down and made the installation quick and easy. The Yale Elanza locks are also energy-efficient, since they only use power when a card is presented to the Reader and, because they are battery-operated, there is no need for any form of backup power to ensure students can always access their rooms during power interruptions.

Benefits

The Yale Elanza lockset has many benefits that make it an ideal solution for The ReZident student accommodation. The Stainless Steel construction of the elegant Elanza handle-set means that it is not only robust for high traffic use, but also ideal for use in a coastal environment. In terms of security, Elanza makes use of encrypted High Frequency RF-ID cards, which were also compatible with the Impro Access Control system used for the perimeter, and the door is secured by a lockcase equipped with a 20mm throw high-strength deadbolt. Since the safety of the students is paramount, one of the key benefits of the Yale Elanza lockset is its panic release function. This allows students to easily exit their rooms in case of an emergency by simply pressing down on the internal handle without having to fumble for keys or turning any thumbturns. A mechanical override cylinder also provides additional peace of mind in case of flat batteries or other system issues.
